The Open Talent session "Controlling light"with Miguel Milá, interior designer, lighting designer and one of the leading figures in modern Catalan design, will take place at the Valkiria Hub Space (c/Pujades 126, Barcelona) on Thursday 10 December at 7.30 pm.
The speaker
Miguel Milá (born in Barcelona, 1931) began working as an interior designer in the architecture studio established by his brother, Alfonso Milà, and Federico Correa. It was a time of discovery in the late 1950s, when people knew very little about industrial design. He soon began designing his own furniture and lamps and producing them through his company, Tramo. Tramo produced the earliest versions of the famous TMC lights from 1958 and the TMM lights from 1961 - timeless classics that continue to sell generations later.
With the designers and architects of the era, he participated in the first meetings in Barcelona to promote design and establish it as a professional practice, which would lead to the creation of the ADI FAD industrial design association with André Ricard, Antoni de Moragas, Oriol Bohigas, Alexandre Cirici Pellicer, Manel Cases Rafael Marquina and Ramón Marinel.lo, among others.
After a period in which he specialised in interior and exhibition design, he returned to industrial design with a a more modern language and a rationalist approach. This period is exemplified by the design neo-romantic bench (1995), which is today a common feature in the urban landscape. It was followed a few years later by the light leg neo-romantic bench (2000) and the light leg neo-romantic aluminum bench (2002).
Miguel Milá has played a key role in the history of modern Catalan design. His work has been acknowledged with the National Design Award and the Compasso D'Oro prize in recognition of his career and his contribution to raising the profile of Spanish design abroad.
