Why this continuing education master's degree?
Newborn babies have not fully developed their sight, one of our most important senses bearing in mind that 80% of the information we receive comes through our eyes. Our visual system begins to develop at birth, based on the various visual stimuli and experiences that the child receives. We know that this development reaches maturity at around the age of 12, and the first six years of life are crucially important.

A correct visual development in childhood will provide the person with a complete visual system, good visual acuity, good motor skills, etc. throughout their life, and no limitations when doing activities of daily life or when choosing a job.

Children's optometry is vitally important for all these reasons, as all optometrists working with children must be able to prevent and detect disorders and provide treatment, and where appropriate, refer patients who require it to the appropriate professional. Although it is a crucial specialist field for ensuring good visual health, there are currently very few optometry professionals working in paediatrics.

This master's degree in Paediatric Optometry provides high quality training in the latest technologies and techniques in paediatric optometry, which is essential knowledge for professionals working on the detection, monitoring and treatment of multiple eye disorders and pathologies in childhood.

The teaching staff on the master's degree course is made up of the best professionals from the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, a leading centre in the paediatric field, experienced teachers from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and professionals from Ocularis, the NGO specialising in optometric and ophthalmic training in developing countries.

Learning tools
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Flipped classroom
The contents are prepared prior to the face-to-face lessons. Practical sessions take place in the classroom, which enable understanding and application of concepts to real cases and the expansion of knowledge with more technical and specialised details.
Tutorship
Students are given technical support in the preparation of the final project, according to their specialisation and the subject matter of the project.
Advanced asynchronous communication
Systems that enable smooth and clear communication in any situation (video chats, forums, recorded lectures, etc.).
Synchronous Forums
Activities that allow open discussions about case studies, articles or questions about specific topic. These spaces for debate aim to share points of view and encourage the participation of students.
Streaming sessions
Synchronous online interactive open sessions will be planned. Professors attend these sessions and students pose questions and address their concerns. Synchronous sessions will be scheduled in calendar.
