Why this continuing education master's degree?
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is rapidly taking root internationally. This means an increasingly higher level of maturity is required. When a client asks for BIM, they do not simply want models with information about what they are promoting or operating. What they want is for their suppliers, whether they are project drafters, contractors or managers, to use this methodology to offer a product with higher quality, more added value and less risks. This demand means that all professionals in the sector must acquire new skills to complement the roles they are currently engaged in.

Competence in BIM also requires specialisation. For this reason, our postgraduate programme on Open BIM in Project Development and Management offers four different lines, for in-depth study of the particular aspects of each discipline while maintaining a holistic vision. Our innovative learning methodology enables the various specialist fields to interact with each other and collaborate in undertaking a multidisciplinary project.

The programme ends with a Master's Degree Final Project which develops a new business idea based on BIM.

Our programme provides comprehensive training that covers both instrumental and management aspects, which is highly appreciated by the professional market. In fact, student employability is 100%, to the extent that those seeking work at the beginning of the programme find it even before they complete the course.

The Master's degree has an Advisory Board formed by strategic companies in the sector. Its role is to provide different points of view that enrich the content and teaching of the Master's degree, so that students can better understand the working environment. They also offer internships and job offers.
Aims
  • To understand BIM methodology, know how to apply it and be able to convey it by internalising its methodological and ideological principles.
  • To undertake commissions for building, structures or facilities.
  • To undertake construction projects during the project execution phase.
  • To use BIM during the operation and maintenance phase.
  • To calculate the cost of executing the project and plan its construction.
  • To manage projects using BIM, confirming compliance with the requirements of the assignment, analysing the content of the constituent models, and organising work processes that permit multidisciplinary coordination.
  • To interpret bidding specifications with clauses related to BIM to correctly size the resources needed to comply with them.
  • To access new market niches.
Who is it for?
This programme is aimed at people who already work in companies in the construction sector, or those who intend to do so in the near future. It is also suitable for professionals wishing to refocus their profile or undertake their own business project.

  • Specialisation in Building
  • Architects.
  • Building engineers, quantity surveyors and/or surveyors.

12 ECTS 30h
Multidisciplinary IPD Project
All the subjects in this programme converge in this multidisciplinary subject which looks at BIM from the point of view of the construction life cycle. A multidisciplinary workshop is organised that takes up a large proportion of the course. In it, students will undertake a real project as a team, putting into practice everything they have learned in a collaborative environment. In this workshop, students will learn to coordinate with each other to carry out a project that starts with a statement with an open solution. In other words, they will not only put their instrumental knowledge into practice, but also their strategic, technical and human knowledge, establishing a new way of working which is more efficient and sustainable.

This activity is divided into two parts:
  • The first part deals with the conceptualisation of the project and the design of the general solution.
  • The second part deals with constructively defining the design, planning the work and preparing the model for the operations and maintenance phase.

Part 1. Draft Project and Basic Project

During the first part, each team will define the general concept of the solution, and design the solution that it considers most appropriate from a multidisciplinary point of view. The challenge lies in simultaneously making progress, and finding a way to contribute to the overall solution from the outset. Two of the people involved in the projects are the Promoter and the final Operator, in roles adopted by master's degree teaching staff. Students thereby learn to negotiate the scope of the assignment and the final solution with the client, which in this workshop is divided between those making the investment and those exploiting the investment.

From the point of view of specialisation, this subject enables students to study in depth the areas that most interest them in their specialist field, while taking into account cross-disciplinary aspects, such as cost control and optimisation of the Operation and Maintenance phase.

While carrying out their project, students will be tutored and accompanied in class by the teaching staff who have taught them the previous subjects, helping them to apply everything they have learned in a real and open case.

Part 2. Construction and Operations and Maintenance Project

During the second part, what students have learned in the BIM subjects for Pre-Construction, Operations and Maintenance in each specialist field will be applied in the context of the project that was begun in the first part of the project.

As in the previous case, the activity is carried out on a multidisciplinary basis, so that each student will apply what they have learned in the project from the perspective of the knowledge areas they want to study in more depth. Their work will be tutored and accompanied by the same teachers who provided their prior instrumental training.

7 ECTS 60h
BIM as a Business Model
BIM involves a change in the business model in which this methodology is implemented. This means that training is necessary to be able to understand the new rules of the game. Not only does the product that is delivered to the customer change, but also the resources needed and the way it is contracted.

It is also necessary to convey the added value that is being offered to the client, since the success of most projects in which BIM is implemented depends on this ability. To do so, it is necessary to learn how to interview a client, in order to determine what they really need and consider valuable.

Finally, it is necessary to learn how to implement innovation both at the organization and project level. This means learning to change both organizational structures and habits in human and contractual relationships.

The content is as follows:
  • Commercial communication.
  • Lean Start-Up.
  • Prototypes.
  • Case studies.
  • BIM implementation in projects.
  • BIM implementation in organisation.
5 ECTS 10h
BIM Start-Up Practical Session
The Master's degree programme completes the training process with this Master's Degree Final Project. The aim is for students to find their own professional path while learning to develop new business ideas.

BIM opens up a wide range of possibilities, in which everyone has the opportunity to develop the services with which they feel most comfortable and capable. Students will also find out which opportunities provide a response to the real needs of the market. They will therefore develop an entrepreneurial attitude that will accompany them throughout their lives.

The valuable professionals of the present and of the future are those who provide value and innovation in their professional development, regardless of the position they occupy. The labour market demands excellent candidates who are able to think judiciously, based on arguments and foundations. People capable of adapting to constantly changing environments are also highly valued.

For this reason, we incorporate the Lean Start-up methodology in our programme, for students to learn to develop a new service or improve an existing one so that a real customer can assess their suitability.

This enables students to cover the subject that interests them most based around BIM, enabling them to grow beyond the scope of the programme itself.

The contents of the practical session are as follows:
  • Description of the Idea.
  • Customer Fit.
  • Interviews and results.
  • Unique Value Proposition.
  • Prototypes produced.
  • Landing Page.
  • Feedback obtained.
  • Lessons learned.
