Why this continuing education course?
In an increasingly connected and technological world, the application of simulations in transport and knowledge of digital twins have become crucial factors for companies and professionals. The increasing complexity of urban mobility systems, coupled with the need to optimise them and anticipate potential transport breakdowns, drive the demand for professionals with skills in these fields. This includes the ability to create and apply accurate and realistic simulation models, incorporating real-time data to evaluate scenarios and make strategic decisions.

The Continuing Education Course in Digital Twins for Smart Mobility offers specialised training in the use of real-time digital simulation models focused on urban mobility. Through this training, students acquire competences for the creation and application of simulation models with real-time data called digital twins, for public and private transport, addressing the movement of vehicles, goods and users.

The teaching team of this course is a group of professional experts from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, CERTH and CARNET, who will provide a vision of theory and practical application of the academic contents, enriching the learning process with concrete examples and real cases. In addition, the course will involve instructors from the AIMSUN simulation programme company who will guide students in the construction and application of the models.

The creation and implementation of this course is co-funded by EIT Urban Mobility, an organisation committed to fostering the expansion and innovation in urban mobility on a European scale.

An intermediate level of English is required for the correct understanding of the asynchronous and supporting material.
Promoted by:

Training Content

List of subjects
1 ECTS 6h
Face-to-face
Fundamentals
In this introductory module students will learn the essential fundamentals of transport theory to develop digital twin models of mobility. It will provide an overview of the main concepts, technologies and applications related to digital simulation and its application to urban mobility.
Through theoretical lectures and case studies, an initial understanding of the basic components and potentialities of a digital twin in the smart mobility environment will be acquired.
1 ECTS 6h
Face-to-face
Static inputs: infrastructure and urban elements
Introduction to digital twins and the process of developing a digital replica of an asset by capturing urban elements and areas of interest that affect mobility.
The technologies and processes involved in capturing the reality, survey and geometric modelling of the asset through point cloud scans, and their processing as an element that contributes to the development of the digital replica and BIM modelling in the development of digital twins will be discussed.
1 ECTS 6h
Face-to-face
Dynamic inputs: sensors and real time data collection
Various sensors and technologies for collecting mobility data will be presented.
Students will learn about possible uses and combinations through real case studies and available platforms.
Data and platforms will also be related to transport models and digital twins models, as well as decision support platforms, presenting examples of real applications.
2 ECTS 18h

Blended learning
Simulation framework
Students will learn how to build a simulation model using the AIMSUN software with real detection data for a specific case.
The step-by-step process of model generation, data input and simulation of various extreme situations will be detailed. They will be equipped with the necessary skills to create accurate and applicable simulation models, with special emphasis on the use of real-time data to improve the representation and understanding of urban mobility dynamics.
In addition, two hours will be set aside to support students in building their coursework model.
1 ECTS 6h
Face-to-face
Complete digital twin use case
A wide range of innovative use cases and practical examples will be presented, illustrating the diversity of applications offered by digital twins and their transformative potential.
Real-life scenarios and creative solutions implemented in different cities and urban environments will be presented.
In addition, two hours of this module will be reserved for students to present their course projects, describe the case analysed and present and discuss the proposed solutions.

Learning methodology

The teaching methodology of the programme facilitates the student's learning and the achievement of the necessary competences.

Learning tools
Participatory lectures
A presentation of the conceptual foundations of the content to be taught, promoting interaction with the students to guide them in their learning of the different contents and the development of the established competences.
Practical classroom sessions
Knowledge is applied to a real or hypothetical environment, where specific aspects are identified and worked on to facilitate understanding, with the support from teaching staff.
Case studies
Real or hypothetical situations are presented in which the students, in a completely participatory and practical way, examine the situation, consider the various hypotheses and share their own conclusions.
Success stories
Outstanding business knowledge and experiences with high added value acquired during an outstanding professional career are presented and shared.
Problem-based learning (PBL)
An active learning methodology that enables the student to be involved from the beginning, and to acquire knowledge and skills by considering and resolving complex problems and situations.
Workshops
Students are supported when undertaking group work, including theoretical sessions which provide the tools and knowledge needed to achieve a result. Ideas and results are exchanged between all the participating groups.
Synchronous Forums
Activities that allow open discussions about case studies, articles or questions about specific topic. These spaces for debate aim to share points of view and encourage the participation of students.
Assessment criteria
Attendance
At least 80% attendance of teaching hours is required.
Level of participation
The student's active contribution to the various activities offered by the teaching team is assessed.
Work out projects
Studies on a specific topic, by individuals or groups, in which the quality and depth of the work is assessed, among other factors.
Completion and presentation of the final project
Individual or group projects in which the contents taught in the programme are applied. The project can be based on real cases and include the identification of a problem, the design of the solution, its implementation or a business plan. The project will be presented and defended in public.
Work placements & employment service
Students can access job offers in their field of specialisation on the My_Tech_Space virtual campus. Applications made from this site will be treated confidentially. Hundreds of offers of the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development employment service appear annually. The offers range from formal contracts to work placement agreements.
Virtual campus
The students on this continuing education course will have access to the My_ Tech_Space virtual campus - an effective platform for work and communication between the course's students, lecturers, directors and coordinators. My_Tech_Space provides the documentation for each training session before it starts, and enables students to work as a team, consult lecturers, check notes, etc.
